037 – Atheists Call In – No Religion Required

The damn atheists are calling.  We interview Missionary Bob and later Brother Bobby.  Two unrelated guests who shared their transformation stories with us all.

Brother Bobby

You can follow along as Bobby dissects the Bible stories for us.  He has a new blog where he is taking critical look at all those stories we were taught growing up. He also shares some of the stories the preacher purposely left out.  Bobby writes from Savannah, GA and has recently come out of the closet.

Missionary Bob

After spending 17 years as an evangelical missionary, he decided to read the damn Bible.  Big Mistake!  Listen or watch below as he shares his story.

News

Pisgah High SSA club

Yes, we had some news but the biggest story for us and I promise we are only a wee bit biased, is the Secular Student Alliance club at Pisgah High.  Kalei Wilson, my own flesh and blood opted not to report her school under the cloak of anonymity as I suggested, but instead came out like bull in a china shop.

She’s just recently turned 15 and has the guts of a UFC fighter.  She’s faced some horrible threats and mean ass words from the Christians but overall has been overwhelmed with the support and kindness she’s received.

SSA Pisgah Secular Shirt

Recently she made national headlines after her school, Pisgah High, denied her Secular Club.  She reported it to the Secular Student Alliance and then to the FFRF – Freedom From Religion Foundation who in turn reported it to the NC American Civil Liberties Union.

HUGE THANKS TO SSA, FFRF, ACLU, the media and our supporters.

Short story; the school got schooled and Secular Student Alliance Pisgah High was formed and has scheduled their first meeting.  Immediately the Facebook page was flooded with happy comments of support and one gentleman, Anton Richards sent Kalei $100.00 to fund her first Pizza Party meeting.  Mr. Richards is a professor who apparently started his Facebook profile just to be able to contact Kalei and make the donation.  (Feel free to friend him as he is brand new to Facebook)

Others have asked if they could make a donation and so Kalei set up a GoFundMe page yesterday.  Her goal is to use the funds to get some T-shirts for members, get supplies for demonstrations (skeptic and science stuffs) and to promote the group.  Make a donation here.

Kalei has received many messages of support and recently was told about the CFI – Center For Inquiry Campus Affiliates which will surely help her create some wonderful topics for discussion at the meetings.

Amongst all the news reports, Kalei was so happy to actually speak with Hemant Mehta of the Friendly Atheist Blog.  He recently did a story on the denial and then has included 2 followup stories.  Story One    Story Two    Story Three

The Secular Student Alliance has invited Kalei to the conference in July to speak.  She’s also been invited to attend the FFRF mini-conference in North Carolina and will get to meet Dan Barker and hopefully Annie Laurie Gaylor, co-presidents of the Freedom From Religion Foundation.

Christians Support Pisgah High School Decision

It was to be expected, the negative comments and personal attacks for the student attempting to start a SSA (Secular Student Alliance) club at Pisgah High School in Canton, NC.  Kalei recently took up her brother’s quest in having a secular club at her school.  But what she didn’t expect was the many at her school that would support her efforts.

“The good outweighs the bad so far.”

You can immediately understand the importance a group like this would have.  Reading the above statements made by other students you can see that many are painfully ignorant.  “but I thank My God he has a son who continues to love those who turn against him”  Really?  Your God is worshipped by about 2 billion people, which leaves about 4 billion who’ve been indoctrinated to believe in a different God or who don’t believe at all.  This person makes the assumption that all who aren’t Jesus-ites must have turned against him.  And doesn’t God say he will kill the unbelievers, and didn’t Christ say to bring all unbelievers to him and slay them before his eyes?  Yes, that’s in your Holy Book.

Another writes that, “Starting an atheist club is the worst thing I could think of doing at a school.”   Hmmmmm… Worse than using the students for drug trials or chemical war tests?  Worse than teaching them that Muhammad is the one true god and all others shall be slain?  I can think of many things that would be worse.

Another writes, “that’s not gonna fly”.  Watch and learn.

Like Parent – Like Child

From the adults, the comments get no better.

It requires no Rocket Surgery degree to see why so many students are ill-informed – their parents are often no wiser.

Enter the intellectuals, the skeptics, the humanists…

One student contacted Kalei and decided to do a story on her blog.  Mia Renee Cole is a student at Pisgah High, she is the DECA chapter VP and an alumni with the Washington Journal and Media Conference.  Her blog post today inspired me.  It gave me hope seeing such wise youth using their voices in defending the rights of others.

Her article on Kalei’s quest for the Secular Student Alliance club impressed me so much that I began to read some other articles she’d written.  One jumped out at me because it’s on Feminism and her support thereof.  You can read that here: Man, I Feel Like A Woman!

Thank you Mia!  You’re awesome.

Principal Correlates Homosexuals With SSA Request

According to the student at Pisgah High School in Canton, NC – Mrs. Weeks, the Assistant Principal informed him that he could not start an SSA (Secular Student Alliance) group on campus.  Apparently confused after asking the student for time to research the SSA, the student informed us that Mrs. Weeks later said,

“Homosexuals go to school in Asheville, not here.”

According to the student, Mrs. Weeks explained that there were plenty of other groups and that this group would only serve to create problems.  Presumably explaining that it’s why you don’t find homosexuals in our school.

The student reported the incident to the Secular Student Alliance and they in-turn sent the school a letter requesting it reconsider and that the principal contact the SSA.  The SSA reports they’ve never received a response.

FFRF To The Rescue

The legal team at the Freedom From Religion Foundation was contacted and the violation was reported.  Another student has taken up the fight and now the NC ACLU and FFRF have sent a letter to the Superintendent of Schools.  (See below for copies of the SSA letter and the most recent FFRF/ACLU letter.)

Haywood County Schools Has Other Problems Too

Several complaints have been filed over the past few months against the Canton Middle School and Pisgah High School.  Violations such as these were reported:

  • Wrestling Coach has team photo with scripture printed on it hanging in machine shop classroom
  • History teacher speaks of Methuselah as been real and the oldest man to ever live
  • History teacher speaks of Adam & Eve and the Garden of Eden as real events
  • Teacher requires student to swear while placing hands on a Bible
  • Teacher requires 6th grade student to run lapse as punishment for using the Lord’s name in vain
  • Teacher takes a religious survey before playing a movie with religious songs
  • Teacher requests students pray for sick teacher

All Parents Should Be Outraged

It is the sacred right of the parent to indoctrinate and teach their child to believe in whatever imaginary Sky-Daddy they choose.  A school that has teachers promoting religion and one specific religion is in direct violation of the First Amendment and leaves children believing that their school endorses one specific imaginary friend.

Words Of Encouragement

Although not an official group yet, the Secular Student Alliance of Pisgah High could use your support.  Tell the students you support them, leave a comment or like their Facebook page.
